On Your Marks

08/26/2008 02:04 PM

We have a field of 16 to start the second Elimination Tournament event on the Ham Hoc Tours.  New to the event is Muad'Dib who will be fighting his way out of the A-Bracket.

Our defending champion Dirk, returns to try and keep his title, but will be attempting to survive the D-Bracket with a 6 handicap for round 1, up from the 0 he started with last time.

Most players will notice that their handicap for this event is higher than their regular tour handicap.  Remember, for this event, the higher value from the choice of tour handicap or most recent elimination event  is used to start each tournament and then this number is modified each round as described in the rules.  Trashman and Muad'Dib, were the only players unaffected by this because the former has a handicap higher on the regular tour and the later has no prior Elimination event.

Remember, if you score an Ace or Albatross in this event to notify me so that I make sure to confirm it to put in your lifetime stats.

I'm heading to the beach for the holiday weekend so will post conditions for Round one likely by Thursday night EST.  Also, I'll play my round 1 and go ahead and submit it to Alegan if at all possible before I leave, that way my opponent can be sure I'm blind to their score going into the round.

What is it?

The Ham Hoc tours welcomes you to the Single Elimination Handicap Tournament!

For those of you who took part in the WorldSwing Tour years ago and remember the single elimination, handicapped, tournament that occurred each season, this is the same thing.  I, Tarheel have spoken with the Ham Hoc Tour director about incorporating this, my personal favorite event from the old tour, into the Ham Hoc Tours provided there is enough interest.  The plan would be to hold it periodically, according to the HH Tour directors taste.

In brief, it works like this.  Players will be ranked according to their HH tour official handicaps (which means you have to have a non-provisional Ham Hoc tour handicap rating to participate).  Players will be sorted such that in the early rounds, players will play other players of similar handicap.  Players who lose their match are eliminated from the tournament, winners will move to the next round.  Eventually, one player will remain, and thats your winner!  Simple enough.  There are a few rule specifics in the rules section.

RULES AND PROCEDURES

  1. Players will need to sign up in advance for participation at the Ham Hoc Forum by the deadline listed in the proper thread.

  2. Players will only be eligible if they have an official, non-provisional, Ham Hoc Tour handicap rating and have played 10 rounds of golf on the Ham Hoc Tour in the last 6 months.  This is important in order to make sure peoples handicaps aren't artificially static at a 'beneficial' level.

  3. Player settings should be set according to the standard Ham Hoc standard as found on the Ham Hoc Tours Honors Rules webpage found here.  Scroll to the bottom of that page.  Settings should therefore be Black tees, 40" gimmes, 10 max strokes per hole, Meter Speed (Fast, Medium or Very Fast), NO mulligans, NO mouse meter, STROKE play.

  4. To remind, this is STROKE PLAY competition and final result for the round will be your gross score modified by your tour handicap.  This is not a matchplay.

  5. This follows the HH rule of one and done.  Once you start your round, you must play it to completion and you should not replay or restart your round in an attempt to improve on your score.  This is on the honor system.Players may play their rounds offline or online, but if played online it must be played with your opponent for that round only.  Spotters who aren't your immediate opponent are not acceptable.

  6. Course conditions will be posted above for each round.  All players will use the settings listed for the current round, this also applies to the championship and consolation matches, which will use the same settings.  You should take care to make sure your settings are accurate.

  7. Assuming 16 people played, there would be 4 rounds in a month, so deadlines would need to be at the end of each week, so pay close attention to posted deadlines.

  8. Initial handicap rating for a tournament is equal to your regular honors tour rating for that moment OR your most recent Elimination Tournament handicap, whichever is higher (meaning whichever reflects the better golfer).  Subsequent rounds will have your handicap modified such that it represents a 33% adjustment.  For example, if you start with rating 3 and hit a 66 in first round, your new handicap will be 3+3+6=12 divided by 3=4.  Your next round handicap if you hit another 66 would be 4+4+6 divided by 3 and so on.  Note that this is simplified, but in reality is out to 3 decimal places and won't be whole numbers until rounded at the end.  Note that losers of a round will also have their handicap rating changed after their losing round.

  9. Results should be emailed using the link on this page so that they will arrive to me for confirmation by the deadline posted for each round according to the schedule printed on this page.  If you use the regular HH reporter link, there may be a delay as the report would then have to be forwarded to me by the HH Tour director.  Late results will be considered a NO SHOW and your opponent will advance.

  10. Results should be submitted as a confirmable .game file OR in the case of online play, by both competitors emailing confirmation of the final result to the tour.  When submitting a .game file, please submit it clearly labeled as to who is playing, the score, course and what elimination round it pertains to.  For example "Tarheel-elim-r1-sawgrass-61.game"

  11. In the event of a TIE after handicap adjustment, the higher seeded (meaning the more accomplished) player will be the one to advance for that round.

  12. In the event of an uneven number of participants signing up, BYE's will be awarded first round to players with the best handicap ratings within each Flight (a flight is made up of players with similar handicaps).

  13. Make sure to notify in your round report if you get any Double-Eagles or Aces, because the stats summary will keep track of lifetime Wows as well.

  14. There is a consolation bracket for the losing players in the semifinals in order to allow ranking players for first through fourth place finishes.

  15. Due to the very unlikely chance to have 32 players in the field, we are limited to 16 slots for this event.  Therefore, either signup will be first come first serve OR we may have to require a play-in round for the players beyond 16 signed up.

  16. It is not acceptable to cheat.  This means it is inappropriate to 'play' the handicap system by intentionally altering your handicaps in the honors tour in an attempt to deflate your handicap so you will perform better in this competition.  This takes the fun out of it for everyone, so please play fair.

  17. No cussin' allowed when you shank a ball into a hazard.
