HISTORY OF CONGREGATION

A Brief History

Continuous meetings of the church of Christ at Lesslie began May 1,1994 in the home of Mr.and Mrs. Fred J. Hager. The room that was used for the meeting place was formerly Mr. Hager's office. At it's inception many of the men who were members had to take particular leadership roles in order for a regular worship service to take place. Those who had not lead the singing, or lead prayer etc. At the beginning, several of the men would present a talk during the time a regular sermon would take place. A video tape containing a sermon by a gospel preacher would often be used in the place of one of the regular men. From that point on, we began having three men from the Providence Roadcongregation in Charlotte, N.C., come and speak on a regular basis. Kent Massey, Jim Acuff, and Gregg Whitaker. A gentleman who had been the Associate Minister from the Charlotte Ave. congregation, Jeff Percer, spoke for the congregation on a few occasions.A gentleman from the West side congregation in Charlotte, Dennis Lively, still comes on occasion and speaks. Around 1997-98, Brother Charles Fetters, formerly of the Charlotte Avenue Congregation came to speak for us on a regular basis. Following him was Brother Bill Smith from Greenville, S.C. Our present Minister, Brother Beasley, at one time was coming to speak for us one Sunday evening a month. He began serving here in the year 2000.

Our present location was purchased August 16,1994. A mobile home was on the lot when the land was purchased. We began meeting in it at that time. Plans were then made to start constuction on a building. The dedication ceremony was held in June of 1996. Kevin Walker was the first to be baptized after this congregation was formed. We have had some financial assistance from the Charlotte Avenue congregation.

We continue to remember those that were instrumental in getting the church started here who have since gone to be with God, Jack Anthony, Lloyd Baker, Leola Bickle, Eugene Logan. and Osborn Miller.

We currently support Brother Kenny Williams who is a missionary is a missionary in Ukraine.
